One of the most important steps of the growth phase of a startup is its internationalization. This requires planning, skills and actions on behalf of the team that may be very different to the activities to grow the startup locally.
At a recent conference two very prominent entrepreneurs, Rodolfo Carpintier (DaD) and Lluis Font (Zyncro), respectively from Madrid and Barcelona, suggested that there are areas of improvement for Spanish entrepreneurs. The outcome from the talk were the following points:
-
Strengthen international background.
-
Start from Europe (not Latin America) it is close in geography and culture and it is more cost effective.
-
Find a local partner.
-
Choose an international name/brand that you can export easily.
-
Don’t re-create your team outside, make sure to have a small but talented team.
-
Do your homework - understand the new markets you are getting in.
What do you think are those 5 or 10 key success factors that entrepreneurs here in Barcelona need to consider when going global? Do you agree/disagree with the points below? Or if you have any experience already with your startup we'd appreciate if you can share some advice.
Looking forward to your comments,
Claudio
